This is a good example of a very rare plane. The Shaw patent planes were only produced from 1910 to 1918. An eight year production run. This example dates from the latter part of the run. It is marked Sargent VBM on the cap and the cutter. The cutter is also marked 18C as it should be. The body in back of the knob is marked Sargent and 18. The back of the lever cap is marked 18. Now on the bottom of the frog (which is not cracked or welded as are so many Shaws) it is marked 10. I am fairly certain that the plane left the factory this way. Especially since the 10 books more than twice what an 18 goes for I can't imagine a collector robbing a 10 for its frog. If you need that #10 frog is your chance. Wont come again. Dave Heckel mentions in his Sargent book that towards the end of the production t is evidence that Sargent was making up planes from available parts so that might explain a 10 marked frog on a # 18 plane. The plane rates good overall. The main drawback is it only retains about 50% of the japanning. The tote and knob are good but it looks like sometime in the distant past they were refinished. On the bottom t is a very small area of shallow pitting. Should show up in the pictures. You will need your good glasses to see it well. Also the owner put initials in a couple of places in the left side of the plane. See pictures. read more
