Up for auction a quite scarce 1927-1928 HEDDON NO.31 AB "WALTONIAN" LEVEL-WIND CASTING REEL. These lightweight aluminum casting reels were first introduced by James Heddon's Sons in their 1927 catalog and would only sell for a couple years. These were actually Trade reels produced for Heddon by the Meisselbach-Catucci Mfg. Co. of Newark, N.J. and were identical to their No.1000 "Superlite" models. I've added a photo of the description and original listing of this scarce model, taken from page 146 of Phil White's classic book "Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels". Faceplate is stamped "WALTONIAN No.31 AB" near the top and "J. HEDDON'S SONS - DOWAGIAC, MICH. - MADE IN U.S.A." near the bottom. Reel comes equipped with aluminum body, strong I've listed this reel as being in only Good condition, because there is an issue with the level-wind function. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I originally thought it was the pawl nut that needed to be replaced, but it turns out the nut is fine. Rather, I think there is a rough spot on the worm gear that needs to be filed. I can't have all the fun, so I'll leave that to the buyer. Reel works perfectly otherwise and is extremely smooth-running. Shows overall surface wear but still displays nicely. A very scarce model that, with some TLC, could be a nice addition to a collection. read more
