This auction features a rather hard to find spool cabinet. These cabinets were manufactured for the J&P Coats Company and measure 22 inches in overall length and is 17 ½ inches in diameter. If you are a lover of authentic old dry surfaces on your antiques, this is the one for you. This cabinet is a survivor. Although it does show wear, it is all original with the original dry surface. The cabinet is made in the shape of a spool of thread, and even has a cotton rope wrap around the center to replicate thread. This wrap is original and one can see from the color of the bottom, at one point it was a burgundy color. The top of course has faded over the years, has a few areas which have darkened with age, and two spots (pictured) where there is a small tear in the wrap. These tears are quite old and there are no worries about the wrap coming unwound but mentioned for accuracy. There are four drawers, each retaining the original knobs. One knob pulls off when pulled on, so it will need to be re-glued. The drawers are made of poplar and measure 21 3/8ths x 11 ½ x 1 ¾ inches. I believe that each drawer would have been subdivided to host spools. If this is the case, the dividers are missing. The back of the cabinet is missing the paper label as can be seen in the pictures. The wood cradle is original and supports the piece just fine. Please read more
