DESCRIPTION: Payment by Mail is always OK! This auction is for an early Civil War era surgical instrument marked Charriere who was a famous French maker in the mid-1800's. Although this instruments were made Pre-Civil War, they were used throughout the Civil War by both Union and Confederate Surgeons. This instrument has tortoiseshell handles that are in excellent condition in spite of a couple of really tiny bug bites that are very hard to see and even photograph which I tried. I do not know the name or use for this instrument. The instrument is 3-3/4" long tip to tip closed. The tang on the blade is stamped Charriere and it is bold. The blade and handles are original to each other. The blade when extended has a lock open mechanism. The two little bites I referred to previously are along the edge and actually more on the inside of the handles. They do not present when viewed from either side. Only when look down inside the between the two sides of tortoiseshell. The instrument has some rust spots. The rust has been removed but scars remain. I have made no attempt to remove the scars; however, I do not believe that it would be difficult if you should so desire. Please look at the photos. If you are looking at this item, you know what you are doing, so ask questions. I am a straight shooter seller. I do not omit problems or try to read more
