Pre War Federal Springfield M1855 .58 cal. Socket bayonet.Unlike most M1855.s.this one has a 15 inch blade with a 3 inch socket.Total length is about 17 3/4 inches. This was the original bayonet issued with the original M1855 Rifled Musket. This is NOT a 45-70 postwar bayonet. It is a .58 cal and a penny falls through the socket easily.Outside socket diameter is 23 mm.This was used by both sides during the war as arsenals stocked with the 1855 muskets and bayonets were seized by the Confederates. The M1861 showed minor alterations but took several months to produce the numbers needed for the field. The Horse Soldier in Gettysburg website shows an example of identical dimensions. it does not appear to have been cut down to me but Ive included a couple close ups of the tip for your determination.(pics 11 and 12)This ones in pristine condition with no corrosion, pitting, bends or excessive wear. Nice graying on blade (uncleaned) Locking ring is perfectly functional.US stamp is a little weak or possibly dulled intentionally. There is a small letter "A" near the proximal end of the socket. Perfect for use with a M1855 ,58 Cal. Springfield rifle. I am throwing in a post war M1873 steel bayonet for free.(picture 11) Guaranteed for life to be original, authentic, and as described. Thanks and
