This auction is for one (1) antique AMBROTYPE: (2) GIRLS/YOUNG WOMEN WITH ADDED GOLD ACCENTED JEWELRY -- in BEAUTIFUL EMBOSSED UNION CASE! An acquisition from a Maine estate sale, this is a fantastic example of this type early photography! (Several daguerreotypes, tintypes, and ambrotypes, found in a trunk, were all from the same home, I can only assume they were cherished family photos.) Wonderful treasure, in near mint condition, with only a dirt from the ages in the nooks and crannies of the case, as one would expect from its 100+ years of use, handling, and storage! The Union Case is in outstanding condition, as are the brass hinges and closure! Absolutely no chips, cracks, gouges, etc. -- WOW! The embossed details on covers are atypical: naked man in the tree atop a ladder, with sythe and beer, with chickens kissing on a fence, bird and dragonfly in tree, and other assorted details around a fancy, imagery of a tree -- WOW! Ambro itself is in absolutely wonderful condition, without the expected signs of aging/damage one so often finds. The brass scalloped mat/frame around her is in excellent condition! Young women are sitting, hands resting in laps on books, with rings, earrings, and brooches, belt/fobs all visible and touched in gold gilt! Just a lovely snippet of history! This is one of those "gotta get me's" for the collection! Patented in 1854, this was a 'positive' wet plate colloidon photographic image on a sheet of glass. Their drawback was that, like their predecessor the daguerreotype, they could not be duplicated. The exactness of imaging, although monochromatic, was their advantage over portrait painters of the time, and they were cheaper and lacked the shiny silvery surface of the daguerreotypes, making them quickly popular in the 1850s-1860s. They varied in plating sizes, from whole plates to the tiny 1/16 plates. [6 1/2 x 8 1/2 to 1 3/8 x 1 5/8, with 1/6 plate being the most common size at 2 3/4 x 3 1/4] This is a terrific example of early photography in just wonderful condition -- great piece of tangible history! Wonderful collectible for anyone interested in antique photography, early inventions, ambrotypes, Union Cases, antique couples/man/woman items, or unique historic pieces in general! Low starting price and no reserve make this one of those "must have" acquisitions -- great for either the beginning or invested collector! Great for display or collection!
