This is the 314th installment of a very large private collection of Victorian / Edwardian hatpins! This is the Dr. Howard C. Scharfe collection, assembled over the years 1945 to 1971. You can look it up on the web: Google hatpins collection tour. D r. Scharfe was minister of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA. It's the biggest in the city, Romanesque, designed by the justly famous architect H. H. Richardson. Dr. Scharfe was born in 1907. He started collecting in 1945, having been given many of these pieces from highly respected women of the older, established families of Pittsburgh, including certain Daughters of the American Revolution. He collected right up to his untimely death in 1971. 37 years later, this wonderfully varied and fancifal museum-quality collection is now being offered up for auction by his descendants. It is our most profound honor to be chosen to present this important assemblage of High Victorian / Edwardian Classic Hatpins to an admiring public! The collection is quite large; it now looks like about 350 pieces, including a few that appear in the genre's bible, Lillian Baker's Encyclopedia of Hatpins. We estimate it will take about to late June to place them all up for auction, so please bear with us!
