Scarce.This very large, very thick and heavy book offers a facsimile reprint of a rare and fascinating 19th century classic book on the American Indians. Originally published when indigenous Americans roamedthe lands and retainedm uch of their original aboriginal culture. This book is solid and complete and it is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of pictures. Published about 50 years ago, it is now long out of print and hard to find and usually sells for between $50 and $100. Such a nice copy is not likely to come up for sale again soon on ebay. From the Dust Jacket: "This is the final and summation volume of a comprehensive report on the history and contemporary status of the American Indian, published between 1851 and 1857 and written upon the special request of the American Congress. Its author, an eminent ethnologist, was a wise choice for the preparation of suc ha vast and important project. His experience with the Indian tribes was intimate and varied. His scholarly credentials were of the highest order. Schoolcraft's work provided a compendium of statistics and information on the native peoples of the Americans -- a wealth of astonishing details on tribes, peoples and conditions never before -- and probably never since -- made availabel to the reader. Indian Tribes of the United States is a key publication on the American Indian -- and one which had a considerable influence upon subsequent Federal Indian policy. Schoolcraft's book will prove to be as important and as informative to the moder reader as it was tot he public well over a hundred years ago. First of all, it was written at a time when the Indian tribes were still a viable force in the United States. They had not yet been subdued! Secondly, as this sumation volume clearly reveals, the scope of this work was suprisingly vast and its presentation amazingly alive and exciting. The adventures recounted by Schoolcraft, based on eye witness accounts, are infinitely more vivid than hollywoody epics. Lastly, because of the author's profound understanding of the Indians and his sympathy for their basic dilema -- the incongruity of their aboriginal lifestyle and that of their "civilized" enemy -- we are offered a panoramically human portrait of an entire race being driven to destruction -- yet fighting valiantly to survive. This volume provides a comprehensive view of almost every aspect of the history, social mores, and struggles of various Indian nations throughout North America and even relates their condition to those of Central and south America. Schoolcraft begins with a condense view of post-Columbian or modern Indian history -- when the first European eyes gazed upon the American aborigines.
