This is a vintage (fancy word for used) Schrade USA 498, 49er, part of their Bench Made collection. These were made from around 1973 - 1979. These were first introduced to commemorate the 1849 gold rush in California and the brass end cap and guard featured a hammered gold nugget look to go along with the theme. The Bench Made name was given to them due to the fact that the knives were given more individual attention by the cutlers at Schrade. Each knife was also stamped on the end with a bench mark, one being a cutlers anvil mark and the other a date mark. The knife is 9 3/8" long with a 5 1/8" carbon steel blade. Features Schrade Staglon handles and brass end cap and finger guard. Knife is in very good condition with some scratches on the blade, and a little discoloration on the back. It's hard to tell if the scratches are from sharpening or use. The blade edge looks original or at least only honed once or twice. The blade however still retains its original shape and size. Handle looks like new with just a couple of very small nicks up around the finger guard. The leather sheath is in very good condition as well. I've tried to capture the true condition of the blade in the photos. No box or papers. This is still a great Schrade collectable and still has a lifetime of use left in it. Note: Must be at least 18 to purchase knives. read more
