SCOTTISH - THE BLACK WATCH OFFICERS / PIPERS KC & SCROLLS GLENGARRY BADGE Large Black Watch Officers / Pipe Major Kings Crown with scrolls two part glengarry badge to The Black Watch, The Royal Highland Regiment of the British Army. The badge is in silver metal and gilt / brass, and was worn by Commissioned Officers and Pipe Major of The Black Watch in the glengarry only. It depicts the central figure of Saint Andrew, Patron Saint of Scotland, and the saltire cross in plated silver metal, within a gilt oval circlet with the motto NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT on it. This is all within a thistle wreath with the Sphinx to the base and surmounted by the Kings Crown. To the top of the badge is the two part scroll THE ROYAL HIGHLANDERS and to the base is a two part scroll BLACK WATCH.All on a large star in plated silver. To the rear of this fantastic badge is the long pin and two retaining lugs. A fantastictic example of the badge worn by officers and pipe major of this famous highland regiment. The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS) is an infantry battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland . Prior to 28 March 2006, the Black Watch was an infantry regiment . The Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) from 1931 to 2006, and The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) from 1881 to 1931. Part of the Scottish Division , it was the senior regiment of Highlanders .The source of the regiment's name is uncertain but they were part of the Highland Watch originally raised on the orders of Charles II in 1667 but later disbanded. George II caused them to be recreated in 1725 following the rebellion of 1715 and were to be used to calm the troubled Highlands of Scotland . The government issue tartan they were required to wear was dark and that may have contributed to the name they were given locally which was Am Frieceadan Dubh ( Gaelic m. The Black Watch). but it is also a possibility that the name was given by those who claimed the Watch had "black hearts" for siding with the "enemies of true Highland spirit". [2 ] The Watch was brought into the British regimental system on 25 October 1739 on the orders of George II after much discussion over many years with the military hierarchy who admired the highlanders for their fighting prowess but who were still suspicious of their loyalty. The new regiment was of six companies (later augmented to 10) and number the 43rd Regiment of Foot (later promoted to the 42nd) but retained the name Black Watch as their familiar title. [ 3] In 1881, when the 42nd amalgamated with the 73rd Regiment of Foot , the new regiment was named "The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)". The uniform changed over time, but the nickname has been more enduring. The regiment adopted the royal motto of Scotland's Stewart monarchs, Nemo me impune lacessit (no-one provokes me with impunity).The Royal Stewart Tartan is worn by the battalion's Pipes and Drums to reflect the status of Royal regiment. Six independent companies were first formed from 1725 to stop fighting among the clans. For the pre-1881 history of the "Black Watch" , see 42nd Regiment of Foot .The Black Watch was formed as part of the Childers Reforms in 1881 when the 42nd (Royal Highland) Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) was amalgamated with the 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of Foot to form two battalions of the newly named The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) .The 1st Battalion then served in Africa taking part in the Highland Brigade's dawn assault on the Egyptian position at Tel-el-Kebir in 1882. Two years later it was in the thick of the fight with the Mahdi's tribesmen at El Teb and Tamai .
