Scrimshaw Humpback Whale on Woo Iy Mammoth Tusk Ivory This auction is for one (1) contemporary scrimshaw engraving of a humpback whale in full breach on a piece of woolly mammoth fossil ivory. Engraving was hand done using traditional scrimshaw technique by Dan Stockwell in New England. This is really a gorgeous piece in my opinion. As you can see in the photos, the ancient material has noticeable age cracking. Despite this, however, the piece is very sturdy and stands solid on its base for display. This piece Is not chalky and shows little signs of mineralizazion. The ivory is very well preserved and a nice specimen in itself. It weighs approximately 3/4 pound. I am the artist and will initial and/or date the piece if requested to do so by the high bidder. I did my best to show all angles and thickness in the photos. Measurements in photo is inches. Check my other listings for other original scrimshaw pieces with different themes and subjects. This auction is open to USA bidders only. For more scrimshaw, check out my other items !
