White PoodleThis fabulous piece is by the late sculptor Basil Matthews. The one of a kind miniature sculpture measures 1-1/2 inches tall and 1-1/2 inches long. The detailing and coloring is absolutely phenomenal. Basil sculpts from solid clay; there is no slip castings used. Each piece completely made by hand, and piece is signed. Signed in bottom. The piece has beautiful coloring, texture and glaze. In excellent condition, no chips, cracks or repairs. Small flowers on gold trimmed pillow.Born in Wales, a young Basil Matthews began crafting clay figurines for his own little fantasy world. That was the start of a long and celebrated career as a ceramic artist. By the time he was a young man, without any formal training, the talented, self-taught artist had perfected a new ceramic process, subsequently used by many others. Opening his own studio in the late 1940s, his early works consisted mostly of horsemen, one of which was presented to England's Princess Alice. She showed it to Queen Mary, who gave the work and the artist a ringing endorsement. He resisted mass production and in his small studio, concentrated on specialty pieces limited to no more than about a hundred.
