Quarto (10 5/8 x 7 1/2 inches; 268 x 188 mm.). xx, [1], [1, blank], 198, [1, colophon], [1, blank] pp. With five copperplae engravings hand-colored through stencils (including title vignette).Publisher’s hand-made marbled cloth (predominantly red, gray, and blue) over boards. Buff morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Top edge trimmed, others uncut. Monotype Baskerville with Old Face Open for display and Fournier ornaments for headpieces designed by Stanley Morison. Printed by the Kynoch Press on Dutch mould-made paper. Illustrations printed by A. Alexander and Sons from copperplates engraved by C. Sigrist after designs by Jacquier (Mrs Ivy Skinner), which were then water-coloured through stencils at the Curwen Press and tipped in. The Seasons may be said to be the life-work of the poet: he devoted twenty years to its composition, alteration and expansion. Thomson’s poetry (which is more famous than familiar) is remarkable in that it anticipates not only the interest in nature as subject-matter, but even the diction and metre of the poetry of the Romantic Revival.
