This is a SUPERIOR EXAMPLE of a ROSEWOOD Seth Thomas mantel clock in ALL ORIGINAL CONDITION made circa the late 1865 WITH THE ALARM FEATURE. This is American History at its finest! Seth Thomas was noted for making extremely high quality clocks. Seth Thomas was an apprentice to the famous Eli Terry around 1810. He sent off on his own and founded the Seth Thomas Clock Company, which was in the family until the 1960s! The reason they stayed in business is that Seth Thomas Sr. and all of his ancestors insisted upon building high quality clocks – clocks you could depend on. His home town even named the town after him “Thomaston, Conn.” This clock has the original heavy duty LYRE 8 DAY TIME AND STRIKE movement. Retains its original Geneva Stops, means the clock cannot be over wound! In fact it's all-original, with the original dial has been professionally repainted by Martha Smallwood over the original zinc dial pan in 1973. The case is in very beautiful condition and has a beautiful finish. The case is outstanding – rosewood. The side and top veneers are not perfect but outstanding. The top and bottom glass is the original wavy glass with the original reverse picture. The clock works perfectly and keeps very good time.
