This is a SUPERIOR, best we’ve ever seen, example of a rare Seth Thomas Rosewood 8 DAY very old column and cornice mantel clock. A wonderful, wonderful clock! This is an EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL RARE AND EXCITING NEAR ALL ORIGINAL example of a very early Seth Thomas Rosewood Column and Cornice Mantle Clock in NEAR MINT condition. Ladies and gentlemen; THIS IS A CLOCK!!! It's getting extremely hard to fine one this original and this nice! One of the very best we’ve ever seen. It has a perfect running 8 day Lyre signed weight driven time and strike movement. The movement runs very well and keeps good time. It was made circa 1965. It is an extremely classy mantle clock in need of a warm loving home. This clock is weight driven and not spring driven. Weights keep better time than springs as springs run slightly fast when they are first wound and lose power as they wind down and cause the clock to slow down somewhat before windings. The movement is in superior running condition. (After all these years!) Also this clock looks like it was cherished its whole life. All Three pieces of glass is wavy and original and the reverse paintings are original and the absolute best we’ve seen this old. This is one of the very early HIGH QUALITY clocks made by Seth Thomas , founder of the Seth Thomas Clock Co. Seth Thomas and Thomas Hoadley were apprentices to the first American Clockmaker to use interchangeable parts. His name was Eli Terry. Eli Terry bought land for his first clock “factory” in 1799. After a few years of working with Eli Terry, Seth Thomas set off on his own and started the famous Seth Thomas Clock Company. His company was in the Seth Thomas family all the way until the 1960s. It flourished so well mainly due to the family making very high quality clocks. This clock is a perfect example. If the Maytag repairman thinks he’s lonely… This clock is 150 years old and still going strong! The name Seth Thomas is synonymous with high quality and good taste. Not always the first on the scene with the latest movement "improvement" or flashy case style, Seth Thomas was slow to adopt changes and only when the marketplace had given it acceptance to other companys' breakthrough advances would Seth Thomas slowly and carefully bring their high quality clocks to the marketplace. The results, however, were always the same. When the Seth Thomas clock arrived it was an instant success and it captured the market. As the years have passed, the quality of Seth Thomas clocks has been proven over and over. They are the best. This clock is much more beautiful than the pictures. It is very large and measures 32 ½ inches high, 18 ½ inches wide and 6 inches deep. This clock works beautifully and keeps GREAT/PERFECT time. The ROSEWOOD case is beautiful ALL ORIGINAL AND IN JUST ABOUT PERFECT CONDITION! It was made by a master craftsman for sure by the quality of the construction. The case is really neat as it has 3 original wavy pieces of glass, with original reverse paintings on its large doors. This clock has its original paper label inside which is all still 100% there (rare) in outstanding condition with lots of instructions ala 1865! Has a small label from the original jeweler who first sold the clock in 1869. The back is perfect and original. The heavy weights are original! Really runs great. This clock has a correct replaced dial – the only part not original – adds beauty to this fine clock. Complete with a crank to wind the clock and the original pendulum. Very rare for a clock to retain its original pendulum! In this listing we offer a one of the first Seth Thomas clocks to bear the town of Thomaston on the Label. There have been many attempts to investigate when labels using the town name Thomaston began, changing from Plymouth Hollow. Mr. Willard did extensive research on this subject and the correct answer is January 25, 1865. Seth Thomas died in 1859 and many of the residents of Plymouth Hollow wanted to change the name of their town of Thomaston to honor Mr. Thomas.
