A single copy of the Connecticut Gazette dated January 11 1796 a newspaper. T are many fascinating ads and articles in the 4 page 18 x 11 paper. It has been folded, t is a slight tear w the center fold ends up. It is not brittle and is fascinating and very readable (old English style) some corner tears. One article in a remarkable 18th century account of the Shakers. A remarkable ½ page article written during a crucial point in Shaker history. This article reports on the large numbers of apostasies from New Lebanon and it was believed that Shakerism would run our shortly. The article describes in detail many of the earlier allegations (drunkenness, nude dancing, physical and mental abuse) leveled at the Shakers. The writer related that the Shakers were now much more organized and orderly but that the young would continue to desert them as the rules of the society were too strict.
