Sheffield-Cut Throat Straight Razor-*Shave Ready* The Straight Razor Guy Thanks for taking a look at this fine old M.J. Higgins, Sheffield straight razor that was made in England in the 1800's. It's in nice clean condition and is 100% original with a nice wide blade, barbers notch and a full wedge grind. It has a nice curve to the blade edge and a corresponding sway to the blade back which makes for nice safe shaves making it perfect for the beginner. I say that because wedge blades are stiffer and less likely to nick your face while you are learning the 'angles' and the slight curve makes it much less likely for either end of the blade to catch you because they are swept out of the way causing you to use more of the middle of the blade. This one also displays well if you have no interest in shaving with an old 'face scrapper' but do enjoy collecting them. Item condition specifics : Blade -The blade of this razor is over 6/8th's inches wide and the grind is full wedge. It has a clean finish with no rust, oxidation, chips or cracks. It has a barbers notch and a nice sway back with a corresponding curve to the blade edge. It was manufactured in England with Sheffield steel which I personally feel is the best available. The stuff is hard as nails and holds an edge for a long, long time. Please note that this one is shave ready and was shave tested to make sure it was suitable for use. I did want to point out however that it did not pass the hanging hair test (HHT) which is normally my final test criteria. The thicher blade of a wedge grind makes it harder to get it thin enough to pass that test even though it will shave just fine. The trade off is that a wedge grind produces a blade edge that maintains its sharpness longer because of that lack of fineness. It's always something. Handle/Scales -The handles of this razor are genuine horn and are in overall good condition. They are highly polished and have no cracks. T are a few bug bites on the inside of the scales and along the edges but overall they are in much better condition than most horn handles you find on a razor that is this old. None of the bug nibbles are near the pins or go all the way thru the scales. Pins - The pins and collars of this razor are brass and are in good conditon. They appear to be original or at least t is no indication that the razor has been repinned. Wedge - This razor has an horn wedge which is even and tight between the scales or may even be integral to the scales themselves. Box/Coffin - T is no box included with this razor. Action -The blade closes evenly between the scales and the tension is nice and even throughout opening and closing. T is no wobble of the blade between the handles or around the pivot pin. The blade will hold in whatever position you put it in. Balance - This razor is heavy in weight and the balance is good. Sharpness *- This razor is * SHAVE READY ! * *The term 'Shave Ready' means something different to each of us so let me define for you what it means to us. If a razor has been listed as 'Shave Ready' it has been honed on two progressively finer grits of Norton stone to establish a proper bevel. It has then been stropped on two progressively finer grits of diamond pasted paddle strops. It has then been stropped on linen and finally lightly stropped on leather. The razor has passed the 'Hanging Hair Test-HHT' which is pretty widely accepted and being acceptably sharp. The item is then shave tested by me to determine if it provides a clean, close comfortable shave. It is then cleaned, sterilized, photographed and listed for sale.
