Vintage 1938-1940 SHELLEY posy bowl (flower vase) in MELODY chintz -- an unusual and distinctive piece! This charming bowl is shaped rather like a mushroom on a stem, with the center left hollow for arranging flowers. (I included a side-view pic with the bowl propped in a display stand, so you could get a better idea of the overall shape.) It measures 7" across, stands 2" tall and is 2" across the open center. It's made of earthenware, with Melody chintz on top, shades of green on the "stem" (on the inside as well as on the exterior), and green trim on the edges. Lovely! The base is marked with the green "Shelley England" backstamp (1925-1940) and the Melody chintz logo stamp. Melody chintz was introduced in 1938, so this bowl would have been made between 1938 and 1940, making it a very early example of this popular pattern. This bowl is in excellent condition , with no chips, cracks, stains or crazing. T is a tiny line of color loss on the base (I wouldn't call it a scratch, as it cannot be felt) -- I included a close-up pic of that. Otherwise, all the chintz, paint and trim look great. Altogether a wonderful, unique piece of vintage chintz that is perfectly suited for either display or use. FYI: Earlier this year on eBay one of these Melody posy bowls sold for $174.95, so this auction is truly a BARGAIN -- please enjoy! :-) read more
