Up for bids is this authentic shipwreck artifact recovered off the Confederate Civil War Blockade runner "S.S. Georgiana" sunk March 19, 1863. The British-built steamer SS Georgiana was run aground and wrecked off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina after a failed attempt to run the federal blockade. The Georgiana was something of a mystery ship. Some observers who examined her before or after her loss claimed that she was a very lightly built ship, suitable only for use as a blockade runner. Others pointed the ship's deep draft and cargo of naval cannon to suggest that she was meant for use as a Confederate cruiser or privateer. Whatever she was meant to be, the Georgiana 's career came to a sudden end when she was spotted by the famous racing yacht America , which signaled the blockading gunboat USS Wissahickon . Wissahickon opened fire and the Georgiana's British captain ran her ashore and abandoned ship. The Wissahickon 's crew was unable to salvage the Georgiana , and set the wreck on fire to prevent Confederate attempts at salvage. The artifact is a sewing needle which has been professionally framed, and dust-proofed in a large 241/2" by 201/2", beautiful solid wood frame with a large certificate of authenticity hand-signed by world re-knowned shipwreck diver and historian E. Lee Spence. The certificate gives the full read more
