In 1978, he moved to Southern California to attend California Institute of the Arts, but was offered a job at Filmation Studios. In 1981, he was offered a job as an Assistant Animator at Walt Disney, where his first feature project was The Black Cauldron (1985). After he wrapped on this, he was promoted to Animator. He animated on such movies as The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and Oliver & Company (1988). He then went on to work on some of Disney's most profitable animated features, such as The Little Mermaid (1989), where he animated the character of Scuttle and on Aladdin (1992) where he animated the monkey Abu. Once Dreamworks began, he was hired by Jeffrey Katzenberg as the first animator for the company. He was a Directing Animator on The Prince of Egypt (1998), bringing Moses' camel to life. He then tried his hand at storyboards on Shrek (2001), which became a huge hit and received an Oscar for best animated feature.
