During the height of the arts and crafts movement in America, emphasis was placed on beauty and handworking. In terms of decorative arts, the question to ask was not "how cheap" but rather "how good." Still, the constant struggle between hand wrought quality and its corresponding expense created a few novel solutions. For example, Shreve & Co. -- the premier San Francisco jewelry and decorative arts retailer and producer -- created a line of hand-hammered looking metalware. To be sure, Shreve had metalsmith's form and chase many one of a kind items, but its Dolores line was much more affordable because the hammering was limited to the edgework and was not done by hand. Quite amazingly, the work was still very expensive because silver was expensive. These are relatively uncommon, but in the scale of things, even at a few hundred dollars apiece are more affordable today than when first produced in the first quarter of the 20 th Century.
