This is a two-page letter, hand-written by Chang Yen Hoon, then the Chinese Minister to the United States, on stationery from the Prospect House in Niagara Falls, NY, dated Aug. 18, 1897. It is written to Mrs. Drexel, of Philadelphia, regarding her wish to purchase a collection of rare fans for a museum. It's quite clear and legible. He regrets he can't visit longer but "my duties recall me to take an early departure for Peking which scarcely leaves me any time to see my friends in America." This Mrs. Drexel may be associated with Drexel University in Philadelphia (?). It is signed at the bottom. Chang Yen Hoon was an influential statesman who ended up being executed in China in 1900, unfortunately. Clean condition, with horizontal fold across both pages. US postage is $5.
