The most exquisitely detailed Japanese Satsuma that we have had - and the equivalent to any that we have seen in any collection. This cream and sugar set dates to the Meiji period. Both pieces are signed (as shown). The cream pitcher measures 4 1/4" height. The sugar bowl measures 4 3/4" height (with the lid) and 5 1/2" width (outer handle to outer handle). Both the cream and sugar have side panels, one a rondel, one the ... shape of a Japanese fan, and the panels are similar on each piece (meaning that they are indeed a matched set and not a "marriage"). The round panel depicts a woman and children sitting together and reading scrolls or books that have been removed from a tall wood grained case that is shown toward the back of the scene. The fan shaped reserve depicts women and a childbefore a low cabinet with a painted scene of Mount Fuji upon its front; in the background, a rice paper screen with a cracked ice pattern, a pine tree and everything rendered with such exquisite detail that one can see the individual petals of the chrysanthemum flowers that form the pattern for one of the kimonos. Outside of the reserves, the cream and sugar are each extravagantly painted with vividly colored and very naturally depicted wisteria in flower and, along the base, a band of exceptionally beautiful white and dark blue Japanese iris in flower. read more
