SILVER IRAQ NIELLO ANTIQUE FLY WHISK HANDLE IRAQI MARSH ARAB ARABIC SILVER NIELLO ISLAMIC An unusual old what I understand to be a Silver fly whisk handle of Middle Eastern origin probably of Southern Iraq and in the style of work produced by the Marsh Arabs. They typically employed nielloed designs and are acknowledged to have been very skilled. These Silversmiths were based mainly in Baghdad, Basra and around Maysan province which is in the southern marshes. The item is highly decorative and has local scenes from the river Marsh Arab boats, palm trees and lush vegetation The item has various dinks and bumps and there is some damage to the bottom open edge, a 1cm split and 0.03x 0.06cm slice of silver missing but the damage is all to the bottom and could be repaired by reducing the silver to the bottom or asking a silversmith to make a silver ring to go on top, I don’t believe it would be a very large job. The handle measures 8cm long x 3cm in diameter at widest point tapering to 2cm and has a domed top. There is a wooden bung with a hole where the animal hair would have been to form the whisk. Weighs 34 grams including the wooden part.
