New York 644 and 646 Broadway, NY Original RP Stereoview of Haunted Prison Vintage True Crime Memorabilia 1860's Marble Quarries of the Prison, with Convicts at work. This has GREAT 3D perspective! Amazing view of prisoners in striped clothing as well as team of oxen. This is THE definition of HARD LABOR! Quite a beautiful scene from a building that had a Death House that executed 614 inmatesbetween 1891 and 1963. There are african americans featured on this card so should be of much interest to black americana or negro heritage collectors. Notable inmates include: Albert Fish (serial killer) , James Larkin (Irish Trade Union) , Charles Chapin ( NY Newspaper editor for murder wife), Martha Beck (Lonely Heart Killer), Ruth Snyder (famous photo of her execution), Charles Lucky Luciano (Mobster / Father of Organized Crime), Lepke Buchalter ( American Gangster), El Caballon (Founder of the Trinitarios), Albert Anastasia (Boss of Gambino Crime Family), Gerhard A. See pics! Sing Sing Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison of the New York State Department of Correctional Services in the Town of Ossining, New York. It is located approximately 30 miles north of New York City along the banks of the Hudson River. Ossining’s original name, “Sing Sing”, came from the Native American Sinck Sinck (Sint Sinck) tribe from whom the land was purchased in 1685. Ossining is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. It contains two villages, the Village of Ossining and part of Briarcliff Manor, the rest of which is located in the Town of Mount Pleasant. Frederick Philipse bought the area which presently constitutes the Town of Ossining from the Sint Sinck Indians in 1685. His manor extended from Spuyten Duyvil Creek on the border between present day Manhattan and the Bronx to the Croton River. The last lord of the manor, also named Frederick Philipse, was a Loyalist in the American Revolutionary War, so the State of New York confiscated the manor in 1779. Today, the haunted prison is known as Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison in Ossining, New York, USA. It is located approximately 30 miles north of New York City on the banks of the Hudson River.The name comes from the town of Ossining’s original name of “SingSing”, though the penitentiary was first called “Mount Pleasant” when it opened in 1828. In 1825, the state legislature gave the job of building a new, more modern prison to Captain Elam Lynds, a prison warden from upstate New York. Sing Sing derived its name from the Indian words, “Sint Sinks” which translates to “stone upon stone.” The prison was built by convict labor excavating the nearby marble quarries. Lynds employed the Auburn Prison system, which imposed absolute silence on the prisoners; the system was enforced by whipping and other brutal punishments. Visitors found the silence of the up to 900 prisoners, even as they worked, eerie. After Lynds left in the wake of a scandal involving the pregnancy of a female prisoner, conditions at the prison began to deteriorate. Fires and disease became common, and in 1861, the governor called in the army to quell a riot. Sing Sing has its own cemetery, and among those buried is serial killer Albert Fish .
