This is a rare treat the likes of which you simply may not have a chance at again. This is one of the nicest medium size, complete petrified "golden oak" slabs I've seen in ages! You'll rarely see a piece this stunning in an easy to display sized specimen from one of the most famous and highly prized petrified forests of all time! This is a truly museum grade petrified oak round from Oregon's famed Stinking Water Creek deposit. The name Stinking Water raises chuckles from most folks, but quickly catches the interest of serious wood collectors around the world. Oregon's Stinking Water Pass has produced what are arguably the best preserved fossil oak trees ever found anyw The incredible preservation of the red and white oak wood combined with the gorgeous golden colors make this "golden oak" one of the most sought after fossil woods. This round represents one of the most beautiful full round specimens from this location I've seen in this size! This forest is made up mostly of larger and significantly more expensive logs when you can even find them. Many logs in this size range simply don't preserve as well and won't show the characteristic rays and rings that make oak so sought after all the way through the specimen. This choice round was cut smooth with a circular saw, then lapped flat and ultimately polished to a mirror finish on equipment we built just for this purpose. Any fracture lines are stabilized to strengthen the stone before it's subjected to grinding, sanding and polishing. I'm confident the buyer of this ancient treasure will appreciate the care and painstaking attention to every detail that went into finishing this exquisite oak! I've seen some beautiful oak rounds from this canyon over the years, but this is by far the prettiest color and best preserved of the smaller rounds we've ever had the privilege to offer. The petrified oak found in Oregon is one of the most prized and the most collected petrified woods in the world. These deposits form the foundation of the best oak found anyw on the planet. T are three principal locations for petrified oak in the state. Deschutes canyon produced the most wood with mostly black and white colors. Stinking Water Creek comes next with the famous "golden oak" that is still found from time to time but increasingly difficult to obtain. And then of course t is Swartz Canyon which produced chocolate and raspberry colored oak rounds unrivaled by any other (we have a huge one of those in our store as well). The incredible preservation of the oak wood combined with the gorgeous yellow, coffee, black and gold colors painted into high contrast medullary rays in this log make this a classic collector piece in one of the most sought after of the fossil woods. The details of a round this large are easily lost on the relatively small photo, but even the rays stand out like few specimens could hope for! Like most of the Stinking Water oak petrified wood, this piece is very highly agatized. The high agate content means that this piece has polished up beautifully. It's just amazing how beautiful petrified wood can be and the fine oak specimens found in this remote Eastern Oregon desert location are among the finest in the world. This piece has fabulous cell structure and wonderful eye appeal. The wood grain is very visible in this piece both in the form of annual growth rings and medullary rays.
