This is my last set of bookends cut from this very unusual and very interesting variety of petrified wood! Bookends are a great way to show off the fossil structure in these ancient treasures because they show the fern xylem and root mantle cut lengthwise on the base and book facing sides. They are as pretty as they are fascinating! This is a nice smaller sized set of bookends from one of the most colorful petrified "wood" deposits in the world. It's actually not petrified wood, but is a petrified tree fern - a plant that sort of pretends to be a tree. These specimens are Tietea singularus - a permian fossil found in Brazil. They are approximately 1/4 Billion years old, making them one of the oldest plant fossils you'll ever find used in fine lapidary work! The highly agatized fossil wood used in this set came from an importer I met up with in Tucson this year. I bought the bookends already cut and (poorly) finished, then brought them back to my shop and reworked the face to produce a Sticks-in-Stones quality lapidary finish that really shows off what these gorgeous stones are capable of being. The agatized wood is a really rich combination of colors with red, pink and dark brown being the most dominant.
