Gastroliths, commonly known as GIZZARD STONES are naturally polished, smooth stones found in the body cavities of plant eating dinosaurs fossils, or alone in sediment pockets. The giant plant eaters roamed the earth 205-65 million years ago. Since they had no grinding teeth for chewing tons of tough plant material, the dinosaurs swallowed large numbers of stones of all sizes to aid in digestion. This survival practice is still present in our modern day birds. The dinosaurs undulating stomach (gizzard) action smoothed and polished the stones. This stones was found in the Morrison and Cloverly Formations of North Central Wyoming. These formations are from the Jurassic and Cretaceous Periods of time. This gastrolith was found deep in the belly of dino country by me and were selected for t wonderful shape, color and satin sheen of natural polishing. Bidding is for these six big gizzard stones that weigh a total of 3 ¾ lbs. The more round bluish/gray stone is a type of agate. The very irregular bumpy brown stone is a chalcedony that originally was bubbly in formation before being smoothed and polished. The black stone is a cool layered mineral rock. The stones are 3-4 inches long; 2 to 2 ¼ inches wide and 1 ½ inches thick. This group of six of gastroliths makes a great dino display for anyone's collection. Buyer to pay cheapest shipping read more
