This auction offers a VERY UNIQUE VINTAGE 1981 ANTIQUE LEXICON which gives a neat sampling of the Colloquial English spoken in America at the time . It is titled the AUTHORITY DICTIONARY, & it is authored by Webster Edgerly , a social reform activist at the time. This relatively small book measures 6 ½”high x 4 5/8” wide x ¾” thick, & it has 180 numbered pages. See the front cover in our first scan and the Title Page in the second. This lexicon has the expected aids, guides, and rules as introductory material. Our last three scans give excerpts of the running content. We hope you agree that there is an intangible charm to these definitions, a folksy charm absent from today’s more scholarly works. This RARE OLD BOOK is now itself 122 years old , & as such it shows some of the signs of time. The cloth on the front cover has a few small wear holes near the spine as our first scan shows. It is signed by the original owner on the front inside cover. This said, this book is otherwise in EXCELLENT CONDITION . The covers are straight with no warps. The book is square with the cover edges. The covers are firmly attached. The binding is tight, & the book is clean – no scribbles. The book is complete, and the pages have no tears or dog-ears.
