This Japanese smoothing plane, or hira-ganna, appears to be 50 or so years old. The maker's mark on the main blade is quite indistinct, but seems to start with "Tada-". while on the back it says "Japanese Steel". The seam of the lamination of softer iron is about one-half of the way up the front of the blade. The oak body is in somewhat poor condition. In addition to normal wear-and-tear, t are fractures on both the top and sole, although none of them go all the way through. T are also fractures on either side of the throat, and the sole is not as smooth as it should be. Despite these many drawbacks, however, it does appear to be usable. The blades are in fair condition, but have several rough patches of partially cleaned-up oxidation. (The goldish tint on parts of both seems to have come from having been cleaned with a wire brush, and not from the blades.) The cutting edge of the main blade is sharp but somewhat ragged. Body: W3 1/4" (83mm) X L10 11/16" (270mm) X H13/16" (21mm) Blade: W2 9/16" (64mm) cutting edge X H2 15/16" (75mm) X D1/4" (7mm) at midpoint.
