Society of Medalists Issue No. 2, 1930. Bronze, 72mm. By Paul Manship. Obverse : Head of Dionysus rising from a kylix (a classical Greek drinking cup); legend around: HAIL TO DIONYSUS WHO FIRST DISCOVERED THE MAGIC OF THE GRAPE. Reverse : Two satyrs treading on a winepress flanked by bunches of grapes. Dark brown patina. One of 1,950 struck. Condition : Some slight rub marks on high points, traces of deposit; EXTREMELY FINE. The second issue of the Society of Medalists was issued in the middle of the Prohibition era, and it caused quite an uproar. As the artist wrote, "The medal is not conventional. It is subtly humorous, and is symbolicof a present-day attitude toward certain restraints of the times. Thusit is commemorative of an era." Manship's salute to Bacchus, the god of wine and debauchery, however, was not well received in many quarters, and many members of the Society of Medalists threatened to resign.
