A fabulous pair of early twentieth century solid silver menu holders featuring two characters from the ancient Hindu epic The Ramayama attributed to the Indian poet Valmiki some 2,000 years ago. The menu holders are stamped 'Siam Sterling' and originate from Siam (modern day Thailand). Siam sterling is very collectable, generally featuring characters from the Ramayama (Thai adaptation of the Ramakien) and is particularly famous for it's Niello work. Some believe that the Niello technique originated in Siam from the 12th century. The two characters are Supanna Matcha - Queen of the mermaids and I believe that the second is Khumpakan. Both are in excellent condition, with great detail. The menu holders have a base diameter of 3.5 cms, atanding 3cms and 3.5cms respectively with a gross combined weight of 103g. I believe that the base is filled but it is difficult to tell as unusually, the bottom of the base is also silver. - free eBay hosting
