A curious Edwardian solid silver political souvenir spoon. The top of the handle shows the bust of Joseph Chamberlain, who was Secretary of State for the colonies, and presided over the second Boer War which ended in June 1902. He also toured South Africa in 1903 when this spoon was made. He was a very popular politician, and credited in Britian with helping to 'win' the 2nd Boer war. The bowl and top of spoon are both gilded. Hallmarks : The spoon is English sterling silver hallmarked for London 1903 (Lion Passant, Leopard Head, Date letter h). The maker's Mark 'CS*FS' refers to the silversmiths Charles Saunders & Frank Shepherd. Dimensions: It is 12cm long and weighs 12.2g. Condition: The spoon is in excellent condition, with no dings, splits or repairs. The gilding is vibrant.
