Post Auction Catalog(s) Title: Sotheby's Indian & Southeast Asian Art Including Modern Indian Paintings Auction held in: New York Sale Date: 9/24/04 No. of Lots: 188 No. of Pages: 184 Condition: Excellent Robert Dean, Director of Sotheby's Indian and Southeast Asian sale, said, "We are pleased with the results of today's sale which showed continuing strength and growth in many areas of the market. Miniatures continued to sell well, especially those from private collections with distinguished provenance. We were very please with the section of Modern Paintings which made over $1 million in total, which is clear indicator of the growth of that market. A highlight of the section was and early(1955), small and exhibited painting by M F Husain, Portrait of a Lady, which sold for $78,000 against a high estimate of $20,000 demonstrating that the buyers in that area are maturing into discerning group of collectors. We saw continued interest in the Indian Stone and bronzed, illustrated by consistent prices throughout the sale including lots 37 & 38, both of which appear on the top ten. The high point of the day was the sale of lot 49, the rare and beautiful rendering of Ganesha in stone with painted details from the 12th century, which sold for $332,800, more than four times the high estimate of $80,000.
