Limestone Lamb CarvingSouthern American Folk ArtOutstanding Piece 6” Long x 5” high x 3” wide Signed “J N W” Here’s a wonderful stone carving by a Southern craftsman. It’s a limestone lamb, and I bought it at a night auction during the Smithsonian’s Festival of American Folk Art on the mall in Washington, D.C. It was probably 1990. The tradition of including animal carvings as grave art, as either headstones or footstones, apparently had something of a revival in the 1930’s. This piece is signed “J N W”, and was described as a practice work, never used on a grave. It weighs 3-1/4 pounds, and measures 6” long by 5” high by 3” wide. I lost the bid for a matching piece by the same artisan that was a pair of owls. The tradition of animal figures as grave art goes way back to roots in Africa. I’ve always loved this piece, but it’s time to lighten up on my collection, sigh. I’ll pack this safely and ship in a Medium Flat Rate Priority Box within the USA. International buyers, please give me your postal address, complete with postal code, and I’ll try to get a shipping quote before the auction ends. Either way, the buyer pays only the actual cost.
