Renaissance pattern Southern Pacific butter knife ( butter spreader ). Rare piece to find in this pattern. Good condition; approximately 5 3/4 inches long; strong S.P.Co. marking. See images for best condition report. This was the first S.P. flatware pattern, silver plated, circa 1886 which would have been set on the dining car table with Stanford pattern china. Made by Reed & Barton. The Southern Pacific Company was formed in 1884 by Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Collis Huntington as a holding company for the many railroads owned or controlled by the original "Big Four" (one of the group, Mark Hopkins, had died in1878). These men built the Central Pacific Railroad from Sacramento, California to Promontory, Utah which linked with the Union Pacific on May 10, 1869 to form the transcontinental railroad. <><><><><><><><><><><><> Payment accepted through Paypal only.
