This auction includes two original 1898 Spanish American War souvenir, patriotic pieces sold on the home front during that wildly popular war which helped America establish its first overseas colonies in its first bid at building an empire. The war defeated the Spanish and gave America Cuba, Pueto Rico, Guam and the Phillipeans. T is a 7-inch milk glass plate with a picture of the US Battleship Maine on it, the ship which blew up in Havana Harbor and was used as the cause to begin the war against Spain. The plate is in perfect condition, but the printed image on the glass is faded or worn off in spots. The milk glass candy jar is shaped like a boat with US Admiral Dewey's head on the lid with draped American flags and the word "Dewey" printed below his bust. Dewey led the modern, steel battleship fleet into Manila Bay in the Phillipeans and wiped out the Spanish fleet of wooden sailing ships. One of the flag pole spear head ends is broken off , otherwise the jar is in good shape. Please email with questions. Shipping insurance available. Shipping held until payment by personal check clears bank. I will ship overseas, but only accept Paypal for foreign sales.
