You are bidding on a green beret vietnam cookbook, hand signed by the author Jim "goot" Guttenberg: So, t you are, about to step out of an airplane into 35,000 feet of nothingness between you and some rat infested third world nation. Or, perhaps, you are planning to travel to England w the food isn't fit for a rat? What are your three most important assets to survival? In "The Green Beret Gourmet: A Cookbook for Advisors" James S. Guttenberg will tell you these survival assets are 1) a sharp knife 2) tabasco or chocolate sauce and 3) his cookbook. These recipes aren't exactly going to score a man points if preparing a meal to impress a lady. That is, unless he and the lady somehow found themselves stranded on a tropical island together. But, for guys who are looking to rough it in the wilderness or who really want to add zest to a night with the buds watching Monday Night Football or Chuck Norris on Movies for Guys Who Like Movies, this is a winner. I'm not saying this book is only for men. It's just that men will be naturally drawn to its tiger stripe camouflage cover and I would bet have more of an interest in eating Locust Scampi, Roasted Ants or Boiled Nymphs. However, the whole family can enjoy such succulent dishes as Tactical Turkey, Boiled Shrimp and Campfire Oysters.James S. Guttenberg begins the book with "Notes from the Test Kitchen" about how to measure for recipes and he thanks those who helped him bring "The Green Beret Gourmet" to light. Next, he teaches us to say grace with the Special Forces Prayer. Chapter 1 provides us with the "History of Special Forces Eating Habits" which educates us that food to a soldier is like gold to a bullion broker and in Special Forces field gastronomy is developed to a degree that would make the great chefs of Europe envious. Chapter 2, "Different Grub from Different Lands," explains the nuances of local cuisine as it is found worldwide. He traces how food is influenced by trade and by cultures living in proximity to one another. He explains what cooking oils to use and what the best meals are that can be foraged from one region to another. Chapter 3 is "The Improvised Kitchen" and explains things such as how to bake in clay, how to locate and use natural cooking containers such as hollowed stones or shells, how to bake things like bread on a stick, cook in ashes, cook on wood slabs, how to broil on a stick, how to steam in a hole, and how to grill. Chapter 4 covers C-rations, MREs, LRRPs, and other government issued rations. He basically explains how to spice up these dreaded field rations to make them more palatable and less boring. In Chapter 5, "Demolition Fishin," we learn how to use C-4 explosives to harvest food from lakes, rivers and the sea. This would include fish, turtles, frogs, alligators, crocodiles, and other such creatures that would be killed or stunned by the explosive charge. Recipes include Pickeled Raw Fish, Smoked Fish, Easy Smoked Fish, Fish Stew, Bouillabaisse-Legionnaire, Crab Boil - Morazan, Rice Paddy Crabs, Eel Stew, Fried Eels, Boiled Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, Skewered Shrimp - S.F. Style, Military Mussels, Creamed Mussels ala Militaria, Mussels on the Half Shell - Shocked, Oyster Roast - Redoubt, Baked Oysters - El Salvador, Campfire Oysters, Roast Oysters - R.T.O., Scallop Kabobs, Clam Bake - Bunker Style and Pickled Conch. Chapter 6 is appropriately entitled "Insects (And Other Delectables)" and teaches us how to prepare grasshoppers, locusts, crickets, katydids, stone flies, nymphs, cicadas, ants, grubs and caterpillars. In Chapter 7, "You've Got It... Now What?"
