zipzoomRare Barite & Sphalerite - Location: Elmwood mine¸ Tennessee. Cabinet (see photo for more details). Here we have a somewhat uncommon and aesthetic specimen of barite along with some sharply formed dark reddish-brown colored sphalerite crystals from the famous Elmwood¸ Tennessee locality. The barite forms as a rounded ball-shaped radiating cluster of well formed and sharp platy tabular crystals. The crystals are a light pale yellowish color and lustrous. Even though the sphalerite crystals are dark¸ they are very lustrous having a glassy luster and are well-formed and sharp. These sphalerite and barite specimens from the Elmwood Mine are legendary. The mine has been closed until recently.
