This specimen measures 5 3/4" x 4" Wide x 2" Tall, and weighs 1# 4oz. It is a cluster of SPIRIT AMETHYST; from pale purple, to dark purple at the crystal terminations. The sides of each prismatic crystal column are covered with minute crystals, and they end with nice points, some of which are multi-terminated. On a matrix of cream Quartz. From South Africa. QUARTZ & AMETHYST Chemical Composition: SiO2 Silicon Dioxide Hardness : 7 Crystal Habit: Hexagonal. Usually prismatic, often terminated by rhombohedra. Also druses, stalactitic, concretionary, granular, disseminated, massive. Twinning common. Color: Clear (Rock Crystal), white (Milky Quartz), grey, yellow to orange (Citrine), purple (Amethyst) , light to dark pink (Rose Quartz), brown to nearly black (Smoky Quartz), sparkling from inclusions of mica or hematite (Aventurine), opalescent from asbestos inclusions (tiger-eye). Often contains inclusions: rutile, tourmaline, mica, etc. Lustre: Vitreous. Transparent to translucent. Streak: White, colored varieties white with faint color.
