1854 Orleans Minted US Half Dollar! Very Rare Civil War Era Coin! AS SEEN ON THE HISTORY CHANNEL! THE ODYSSEY MARINE EXPLORATION RECOVERY ARTIFACT! Check out my other items ! Item Description: Original hard wood box, certificate of authenticity, informational guide book, and video DVD. This is one of the neatest items to come through our doors. Originally purchased by the estate for $1599.00 from the Odyssey Marine Catalog item number 401814 on their website /products. Original Civil War Era Relic. What makes this coin even more fantastic is that at the very beginning of the Civil War Louisiana Seceded from the Union (January 1861) and continued to mint coins at the Orleans Mint UNDER CONFEDERATE CONTROL! This coin was part of the horde of silver and gold that was going to be used to rebuild the South after the Civil War's devastating effect on the economy and infrastructure. Lost at sea during a horrific hurricane in October of 1865 while returning to New Orleans from New York. This priceless treasure piece was lost at sea on October 25th 1865 with a cargo hold full of gold and silver! This treasure remained lost until August 2003 when the Odyssey Marine Exploration team located the shipwreck nearly 1700 feet below sea level.
