After reading law under George Wyllie, he practiced in the county courts, later became professor of law at William and Mary, and eventually served as a federal district judge. In 1788, Tucker bought the old Lcvingston House, a small two-room structure located on Palace Green and moved it around the corner to face Market Square, the focus of town life after the capital of Virginia moved to Richmond. Over the next few years the house was renovated and expanded several times to better represent his gentry status and accommodate his large family.
