Early Black Transferware Miniature Tea Set Teapot VOYAGERS ~ SWANS & CHERUB Staffordshire, England c. 1840 This early transfer printed teapotwas originally part of an early childs tea service or an early miniature dolls set. The little round covered pitcher stands stands just 3" tall with a London shaped handle, inset lid and scalloped rim. It measures 6" long from the tip of the spout to the edge of the handle. The teapot is transfer printed in black finished with a pearlware glaze. It is decorated with a cherub hitching a ride in the water from a pair of swans. According to the Transferware Collectors Club database, the pattern name is Voyagers, and may signify a deeper meaning to the imagery: “Swans mate for life and are traditional symbols of love and fidelity. The cherub could well be Cupid himself, and the swans symbolic of the voyage through life taken by faithful and loving couples.” The set has no backstamp or other indication of the maker, though it was most likely made in the Staffordshire region of England. The pattern is illustrated on page 23 in Lorraine Punchard’s book “200 Years of Playtime Pottery & Porcelain”. The teapot is in very good overall condition with a thumbnail size rim chip on the lid, a couple of other fleabits on the lid, 2 small chips on the underedge, 1 small chip on the spout and no other cracks
