Offered for your consideration is a Super Nice Stanley Rule & Level Co. # 4 Pre-Lateral Smooth Plane. This plane is appears to be a Type 4 which was only manufactured between 1874 and 1884 but also has features of earlier types as stated below.Features of this Type 4 or earlier plane include:-trademark stamped on cap iron or chip breaker "L. Bailey's Patent Dec. 24, 1867 -rosewood handle has a distinct and graceful shape with no cracks or chips -beaded edge at the base of the beautiful rosewood knob -no number or foundry marks cast into the bed or under the frog -top corners and back of frog are rounded -no lateral adjustment -round head screws hold frog like a Type 3 or earlier-frog receiver is shaped like the letter I like a Type 1 or 2-frog is regular size and "NOT" split like a Type 3 -fillet cast on each side of high cross rib in front of throat which is in great shape -spring under lever cap is rectangular - lever cap edge is in perfect condition -arched trademark J stamped on 6 3/4" cutter iron -recessed adjustment nut stamped "Bailey's Patent Aug. 31, 1858. Aug. 6, 1867 -lever cap has a recessed backOverall this is a beautiful example of a very early rare Stanley Pre-Lateral Hand Plane.
