Here is useable example of a Stanley number 4 Type 16 smooth bottom smoothing plane. It was made between 1933 and 1941. Maybe into WW2 with the non-nickel plated lever cap. Please note this has been repainted. The frog and the body, both. The body is in good shape with no damage, no rust, no owners marks, but there are some spots of light staining. The mouth is good with no cracks, and no nicks. The rosewood knob and tote are solid with most of the original finish. The tote has an old repair about half way up as shown. The original cutter is very clean. It has a little over 1 3/4 inches left to the slot. It has the Stanley, notched corner logo. The chip breaker is very clean and is smooth and well fit. The brass adjuster nut is good with good knurling. The lateral lever is tight and straight and has Stanley stamped into it. Lever cap has a perfect edge and no damage. It has no nickel plating and never did. It is embossed with Stanley on the front and the patent for the kidney shaped hole on the rear. This would also make a good user plane. This is a well made version that saw a little use. It will work just as well as one that hasn't been repainted. The cutter has life left, adjustments work as they should, and is solid. Sharpen the cutter and put this one back to work. As always, take a look at the pictures. I try my best to show read more
