STC 4021 ballmicrophone Standard Electric Western Electric An STC 4021 omni-directional moving coilmicrophone, known as either “Apple and Biscuit” or “Ball and Biscuit” offered for sale – I am currently offering two of these for sale – see my other item for a second similar microphone . There were several variations of this microphone; this example has a perforated metal shroud windshield as distinct from the more common “biscuit”. These microphones are precision-built instruments that set the standard for performance for many years and still sound exceptionally good. They were used extensively by the BBC in the 1940s and 1950s. Around the base of the microphone are the words “Standard Electric England 4021” and around the centre are the words (in capitals) MANUFACTURED FOR WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY LIMITED. A webpage devoted to these microphones explains the relationship: “Standard Telephones and Cables was the British subsidiary of Western Electric from 1925. Western Electric then became part of International Standard Electric of New York which in turn was a subsidiary of the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation. The microphones marked Standard Electric England must have been made under license by STC sometime after 1935. They appear to be identical to the WE 630 which superseded the 618 in 1935.” Serial number E8
