SANTA CLARA PUEBLO AVANYU POTTERY BY AWARD WINNING ARTIST STELLA CHAVARRIA This traditional deeply carved Avanyu redware pottery is signed by award winning Santa Clara potter Stella Chavarria. The elegant redware piece measures approximately 4" width diameter at the widest point around x about 3.25" tall. The opening in the top measures approximately 2.25" diameter and the base measures just under 2" diameter. The vase was created in the time honored Tewa tradition by collecting clay from the grounds of the pueblo and the surrounding hills. The clay undergoes many preparations before it is molded into the finished product. The clay is rolled into long pieces and layered using the hand coiled method. The coils are smoothed by hand into their final form. Stella carved the traditional Avanyu theme in her work. The piece is polished using polishing stones passed down through generations. The beautiful pottery is fired outdoors as is traditional.
