You are bidding on a book entitled Afoot and Alone; A Walk From Sea to Sea by the Southern Route Adventures and Observations in Southern California, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Etc. by Steven Powers. Stephen Powers was California's first ethnographer. "The walk from Sea to Sea, the story of which is here narrated, was undertaken, partly, from a love of wild adventure; partly from a wish to make personal and ocular study of the most diverse races of the Republic. Tramping month after month across the great empire of Texas; then wandering free and glad beneath the skies of Arizona and New Mexico; beholding now and then the flag of the Republic, flaunting in its wide authority over those lonesome and hungry wastes of the Middle Continent - this is a pleasure, these were the happiest days of my life." (Prefatory). The artist True W. Williams also illustrated works by Mark Twain, Joaquin Miller, and Bret Harte, including two other Zamorano titles Twain's "Roughing It" and Miller's American edition of "Life Amongst the Modocs". Cowan I, p. 181; Cowan II, p. 498; Graff 3339; Howes P537; Zamorano 80 #61.This is a hardcover book which has been rebound (PEASE NOTE) published in 11872 by the Columbian Book Company of Hartford Conn. and is the first edition.
