Literally: ONE OF A KIND. The rarest of collector items. Beautiful: silver inlaid hilt, smooth steel blade, iron grip. This a beautiful European small sword, dating to approximately 1640. It is most likely to have been carried to Ireland during the early fighting, to be eventually owned by an English lord living in Ireland. *(Based on dealer in Dublin, and later verified by Scottish expert on 15th -17th century weapons, who examined the sword directly.) Most likely owned in the Estate of the Earl of Anglesea, who established much of central Dublin, and for whom the phrase "Beyond the Pale" may be attributed. A series of brutish English Earls held that title, until the early 1740's. This weapon came from an estate in lineage and in common with that Earldom. It was common for one of nobility to carry such a deadly weapon under his cloak. The matter of the quillions (see below) makes it more likely that this one actually saw action and was used. One wonders what duels it may have seen in such tirbulent times, especially in the eastern half of Ireland during the early oppession.
