You are buying the entire UNTOUCHED archive - offered just as it was found. I try to preserve collections such as this one by keeping everything together and NOT breaking them up as some people do. History is important, and is preserved here. All fresh and mainly un-researched (except for the basic research I have done in figuring out some of the archive). 99+ letters + 3-4 misc. documents. Most letters have original envelopes. 61 letters from soldier written and mailed back home, and 38 letters written and mailed to him during the war. It is very rare to find correspondence both ways - to and from the soldier, especially letters received by the soldier, as they were often not kept during marches, battles, etc. All letters in original wooden document box. Some envelopes have more than one letter in them. Joseph Lewis was a member of the 167th PA Militia, Company C . This remarkable archive documents his time from late in 1862 - July, 1863, during which time he saw much action, and was involved in the famous battle at Suffolk, Virginia (as well as one previous to this). He gives fascinating detailed accounts of battles and his surroundings, providing important historical content for research. The letters to him from back home in Birdsboro / Robeson, PA - Berks County ( near Reading), are also fascinating and detailed, rich in history as well. SAMPLING of the letters of Joseph Lewis, Civil War Soldier, 167th Pa Militia, Co. C. Dated Nov., 1862 - July 10, 1863.Letters FROM Joseph Lewis sent back home. Very good content, including battles - detailed accounts that are graphic - even a hand-drawn map, wounded soldiers, lots of names, described surroundings including building the fort, rebels taken prisoner, Black enlisted soldiers, Talks about a man killing Stonewall Jackson, Mutany in camp, camp life, music, marching orders, traveling by steamboat, rebel prisoners, many other regiments and names of soldiers, African Americans, death, funerals, picket duty, sharpshooters, units losing men (mentions the 6th Mass. lost half their men), drilling very hard, pickets exchanging fire, chopping wood for General Gibbs, inspection by General - talks about Henry Ward Beecher's son riding a grey horse, says straglers were kind of dumb, building rifle pits, building fort, road, described the building of the fort, talks about settlers there being leaches, described surroundings, remains of soldiers, false alarms - men called out at night, etc. etc. Nov. 28, 1862 . Camp Terrell. - Talks about the government clothing as being poorly made, marching orders, gives list of items the government has issued to him, 4,000-5,0000 men dress parade. Talks about a fight in camp where the Captain was kicked, hammers, and beat up. Dec. 6, 1862. Got arms, bayonets, talks about general, Railroad, etc. - Pencil drawing of jacknife on back of envelope. Dec. 13, 1862 . Sees Washington for the first time.
